I was able to attend the Kentucky Derby in 2002 with sweet seats in the jockey clubhouse suites. Between both races you can pretty much call that a "bucket list" experience!!
Here is a little tip for the day. I got this from my girlfriend and wanted to pass it along. It's got great baby picture ideas. I am also adding my own list of 11 must have milestone pictures.
If you are married to a handy man like I am, you spend a fair amount of time at home improvement places like Lowe's and Home Depot. One day while perusing the paint colors I noticed that the paint brochures feature nice color combinations. So the next time you are spending some quality time with your studly guy stroll over to the paint department and get inspired with a fun new color scheme.
We just celebrated our daughter's first birthday. I struggled with a "theme" for her party. I wasn't wild on princess, or elmo or hello kitty or anything like that. It just didn't feel right for her personality. Since the first birthday is all about the cake and it seemed odd to have a big cake for such a little person I decided on having a cake with the cupcake for her on top as far as the design and when it is time for cake to just pull off the cupcake to give to her. That's what led to her theme, cupcakes. I used the cupcake from the CTMH Cricut Art Philosophy for the invites and decorations and I think it turned out really well. Another fun thing I did was to make cupcake flower arrangements as a take home favor. Which also led to a call to the poison help center when she took a big bite out of one. Turns out she was fine but it sure gave me a panic. I have a bunch of photos but they are mostly on my husband's camera card; we have a point and shoot camera, I point and he shoots!!
The invitation
The whole design inspiration was based on this balloon.
I think it turned out pretty cute. It was a lot of fun and like every mom says on their baby's first birthday, " I just can not believe a year went by that fast"!! Any by the way, her best gift was a wrist corsage from her little boyfriend, Lucas. So cute!
Every three minutes a child is born with a cleft — often unable to eat, speak, socialize or smile. In some places these children are shunned and rejected. And in too many cases, their parents can't afford to give them the surgeries they need to live a normal life.
$240 is all is takes to provide one surgery with Operation Smile. Operation Smile is a mobilized force of medical professionals and caring hearts who provide safe, effective reconstructive surgery for children born with facial deformities such as cleft lip and cleft palate. This international children's medical charity heals children's smiles, forever changing their lives.
Since 1982, Operation Smile — through the help of dedicated medical volunteers — has provided more than 2 million patient evaluations and over 200,000 free surgeries for children and young adults born with cleft lips, cleft palates and other facial deformities.
As one of the most prominent children’s charities in the world and with a presence in over 60 countries, they are able to heal children’s smiles and bring hope for a better future.
With your help, how many lives can we change tomorrow?
Today is Chinese New Year and it's the Year of the Dragon. The dragon is associated with power, luck, change and water. Make it a great year!! (I took this photo at the Denver zoo lights a month ago)
Here is my little weekend DIY. I saw a framed ribbon holder at Pottery Barn Kids and thought I Can Do That!!
It was like $38 or so, I don't remember exactly. I got a frame for $10.99 at Ikea, used some leftover fabric from my daughter's window treatment and got some quilt batting material (is that what it's called???) for like $3.99 plus 20% on sale. I bought ribbon, too but ended up using ribbon I aleady had :)
I cut the quilt stuff to fit the front of the insert that came with the frame. I hot glued the quilt stuff to the back board that came as part of the frame. Wrapped my material over the front and hot glued the ribbons. Easy Peasy!!
This will be perfect to get control of the hair bow situation we have going on. AND it will perfectly coordinate with her nursery AND it was under $15. How much fun is that???
Don't worry I'm not trying to rush the season on you, just to give you artwork ideas in time to do some holiday crafting. I just hate having all the decorations in the stores put up so soon, don't you? It seems to commercialize it too much. Speaking of...I did some shopping today for Operation Christmas Child. They deliver gift filled boxes and share God's love to hurting children world-wide. As I shopped, I struggled to find goodies that were not Disney, or Barbie or Hello Kitty etc. It's shocking really all the things that mass marketed. It really makes you think….and to count your blessings. I selected gifts like a top and a bottom, some basic toiletries, lip glosses, candy, gum, crayons & markers, a hand puppet, a paint set and ribbons & hair clips. You can even track your box to see where it goes.
I can't imagine my child not getting a single thing for Christmas, can you?
